American Society of Clinical Oncology Conference, Chicago, Illinois, 3-7 June, 2011

The production of scientific posters and handouts for the pharmaceutical industry is a job for the experts, demanding a combination of the highest levels of professionalism and technical expertise. The Cinnamon Agency understands this, and has had a wealth of experience working with some of the industry’s major pharmaceutical brands at conferences, events and symposia throughout the world.

The Cinnamon Agency, working in conjunction with Adelphi Communications, recently produced 8 scientific posters and conference handouts for our client, Roche Pharmaceuticals, for The American Society of Clinical Oncology Conference (ASCO) on 3/7 June, 2011 at McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois., U.S.A. Delegates discussed issues relating to the oncology community and the latest advances in cancer treatment, detection and prevention. Roche Pharmaceuticals, based in Welwyn Garden City, is one of the world’s leading producers of cancer-specific therapies, like Avastin, and works in conjunction with oncology experts, healthcare professionals and patients to develop products that specifically target multiple aspects of the disease process, whilst working in combination with established standard therapies.

Our brief was to produce 8 scientific posters for our client, Roche Pharmaceuticals, to draw attention and focus to the new, innovative research work they were doing in the field of metastatic colorectal, breast, lung cancer and, in combination with interferon alpha, advanced renal cell cancer.  At the ASCO Conference, experts looked at the cost-effectiveness and proven outcomes of treating such diseases with proprietary medicines like Avastin (Bevacizumab). The Conference also discussed the current state of health care and some of the proposed worldwide changes and how these might impact on the prevention and treatment of cancer in years to come.

Researchers at Roche Pharmaceuticals have been conducting a case study (Oceans Study) of 484 women with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian, primary peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer, and looking at the effectiveness of Avastin as both a primary and secondary treatment for combating the disease. The trial was designed to evaluate Avastin (15mg/kg every three weeks) in combination with carboplatin and gemcitabine chemotherapy, followed by Avastin treatment as a single agent, compared to a placebo, used in combination with carboplatin and gemcitabine chemotherapy, followed by the placebo alone. The primary endpoint of the study was progression-free survival. The secondary endpoints of the study included overall survival, objective response, and the duration of response and safety profile.

Ovarian cancer is the eighth most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the seventh leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Annually, over 220,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer around the world and approximately 140,000 will die from the disease 1.Surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible is a mainstay of treatment but unfortunately, the majority of patients are diagnosed with late stage disease (when the cancer has grown or spread) and they require further treatment.

Ovarian cancer is associated with high concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein associated with tumor growth and spread. Studies have shown a correlation between a high concentration of VEGF and ascites development (excess fluid in the body cavity), disease worsening, and a poorer prognosis in women with ovarian cancer. Avastin is designed to specifically target VEGF.

All of the handouts for the ASCO conference were produced and printed in the Chicago. The Cinnamon Agency always sources its print locally in line with our green policy and our eco-friendly credentials. We believe this policy helps both our client and the planet by cutting down on unnecessary shipping costs and transportation.
